It’s great to be “in the zone”, accomplishing task after task and progressing through your to-do list, but stretch yourself too far and you might start feeling unfocused, zoned out, or worse – cranky and irritable. Taking breaks throughout the day can make you happier, more focused, and more productive. In fact, studies have shown that your mind solves its stickiest problems while daydreaming. How many times have you had an “EUREKA” idea while walking, driving your car, or taking a shower? Little breaks throughout the day give us much needed downtime to refresh and recharge. When we’re fresh we’re more efficient. We’re more engaged with what we’re doing, and we make less mistakes.

Great breaks you can take just about anywhere:

  • go for a walk, preferably outside but even from one end of the office to the other is better than none
  • eat a healthy snack
  • drink some water
  • doodle
  • look at pictures and watch videos of cute animals (one of my favorites!)
  • listen to music
  • exercise of any kind – simple office stretches will do if you can’t get in a gym workout or run
  • talk, not about work, with friends
  • meditate or daydream
